MATCH DETAILS

This Match was played between the Coffs Harbour Golden Oldies and the invitational QVC O60s team on the 2nd December at the Phillip Hughes Oval at Macksville.

The teams were stacked with representatives from Queensland O60s recent Nationals tournament and some NSW players including an Australian representative Eric Higgins. Everyone was looking forward to a fantastic competitive, but fun day of cricket. The teams were led by Alana Bougoure (Qld) and Barry Hill (Coffs Harbour). Michael Rattenbury represented the Qld team as manager and provided some opening words for the contest.

Coffs Harbour senior representatives and Committee members welcomed everyone to the magnificent ground and recounted its development over the years and the development of the Golden Oldies club. It was poignant that Phillip Hughes father attended the match (far left in photo of the Coffs seniors) which was played in honour of his son Phillip Hughes – we took a moment to recall his tragic passing.

The scorecards are presented below but the flow of the match demonstrated very tight opening 20 odd overs from the Queenslanders taking out the top order of the Coffs team. Adrian Smith (Agro) showed the pace while Jelfsie, Leonard , O’Connor and Laing showed how slow bowling was the key to controlling the the game and taking wickets. Special mention to Shane Taylor for his rapid fielding – long strides from the infield often took him to the ball faster than a player deep in the field set for a long shot.

Later in the innings Richard Cannon (Coffs) supported by Terry Herbert showed some attacking flair attacking some of the Qld part time bowlers (including a special appearance from a local ring-in “Scotty” – who showed double bouncer deliveries still exist). Control was re-established with tight bowling by Tom Garland and a special ripping leg spin over by Brian James. A total of 143 was established.

Following an awesome lunch provided by the locals (the sandwiches were delicious) the Qlders got into their work.

Unfortunately Brian James was dismissed early with a debateable LBW but Rob Laing and our skipper (Alan Bougoure) charged on (both retiring at their 35 balls mark 18 and 28 respectively). Tom and Wayne made smaller contributions to the total than they would have liked but kept the scoreboard rolling, setting up Peter O’Connor innings of 21 retired, Jelfsies (18) and Greg (smashing “almost to the boundary”) Ryan of 15 to get us close to the finish line. We actually finished the innings with 5 wides but we did have some guest batting at the end with Rats and Scotty putting on a entertaining partnership (does squeaky gate ring a bell?).

Glen Pearce did smash a stump in the bowling of Wayne Leonard and this broken stump may form a trophy for us to play for in future matches. Players of the match were Paul Jelfs (Qld 2/11 off 6 overs and 18 runs) and Richard Cannon (Coffs) for his 54 not out.

It was a great event and all the post match feedback was enthusiastic to repeat the match in Macksville again or to share the hosting duties in Qld next time. Negotiations are underway!
